A skincare routine works best when it is one you will actually keep up with. Rather than adding product after product, start with a few basics and build from there.
The morning basics
- Cleanse. A gentle cleanser, or simply lukewarm water if your skin feels dry, helps refresh skin for the day.
- Moisturize. Choose a texture that suits you: lighter lotions or gels for oilier skin, richer creams for drier skin.
- Protect. Finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 or higher for daily use.
The evening basics
- Remove and cleanse. Take off makeup and sunscreen first, then cleanse.
- Treat (optional). If you use a serum or other targeted product, evenings are a good time to apply it.
- Moisturize. Lock in hydration before bed.
Tips for sticking with it
- Introduce one new product at a time so you can see how your skin responds.
- Patch test new products on a small area first.
- Read the directions on each product, and follow any warnings on the label.
- If you have a skin condition or a persistent concern, a board-certified dermatologist can give advice for your skin.
Keep it simple, stay consistent, and adjust as you learn what your skin likes.
